How is gold stamped?

Gold jewelry is usually stamped with markings indicating its karat number. Karat is a measure of gold purity, with 24 karats being the highest possible value, indicating that a piece is 99.99% gold. For example, a “14K” stamp means that the piece is 14 karats, and a “10Kt” stamp means that the item is 10 karats.

What are the stamps for gold?

The 3-digit stamp sequence generally gets identified as follows:

  • 999.9 or 999 – 24 karat gold.
  • 995.
  • 990 – 23 karats.
  • 916, 917 – 22 karat gold.
  • 833 – 20 karats.
  • 750 – 18 karats.
  • 625 – 15 karat gold.
  • 585, 583, 575 – 14 karats.

How do you identify gold markings?

The most common gold markings, carat marks, simply state the purity of the gold. The caratage is expressed as a number followed by “k” (for karat) or “ct” (for carat). For example, 14K and 14ct are both used to express 14-karat gold.
