How do I adjust the temperature on my radiator?
Andrew Adams
You can adjust the heat by turning the thermostatic valve. Look for it on the side of the radiator. The thermostatic valve usually has a taller cap with numbers ranging from 0 to 5 on it. Adjust the dial counterclockwise to increase the heat and clockwise to reduce it.
Can you control radiator heat?
The thing about radiators is that they're either on or they're off—there's no in between and there's no way to adjust the temperature. Enter the thermostatic radiator valve, an add-on that can control the amount of heat emitted from a unit. What are the 2 knobs on a radiator?
One valve accounts for the amount of hot water that enters the radiator. The other valve, referred to as the lockshield valve, balances the system by regulating how much heat the radiator gives off. For a more detailed insight, take a look at our Radiator Valve Guide.Which way do you turn the radiator valve for on?
Turn valves clockwise to turn your radiator off and anticlockwise to turn it back on. Turning your radiators off is easy. What number should your radiators be on?
As a rule of thumb most guidelines recommend heating your home to 70F (21C) and bedroom temperatures should be kept a little cooler to around 64F (18C). For most people this temperature will be comfortable, but if it feels a little hot (or alternatively cold) then the temperature can be adjusted from this baseline.HOW RADIATOR VALVES WORK AND HOW TO SET THEM - TRV/Thermostatic
What does the 1 to 5 on radiator mean?
1 = 10°C. 2 = 15°C. 3 = 20°C. 4 = 25°C. 5 = 30°C.Should radiator valves be fully open?
You should also fully open the TRVs (thermostatic radiator valves). Whilst thermostatic and wheel head valves can be opened and closed by hand, the lockshield valves require a dedicated tool or an adjustable spanner.Should both radiator valves be open?
You should open both of the valves on all of your system's radiator when you are starting the radiator balancing process. You will most likely need to use pliers to open the lockshield valve. What do the symbols mean on a radiator?
Radiator valves have numbers or symbols to represent how much heat the radiator is putting out. Normally, these numbers range from 1 – 6. Turning the valve to 3 should give you a room temperature around 20°C. Each number above or below then represents a single degree. Why do I have two valves on my radiator?
Each radiator will have two valves. One will control the amount of hot water that enters the radiator and the other will balance the system by controlling how much heat comes out of your radiator. This is known as the 'lockshield valve'.How far open should radiator valve be?
You should open the Lockshield valve on the first radiator by one-quarter of a turn. Now open the Lockshield valve on the last radiator on your list. Each radiator in between should have its Lockshield valve opened slightly more than the previous radiator. How do you open both radiator valves?
Open up the valves on all the radiators in the house by turning them anti-clockwise (5). Wheelhead and thermostatic valves can be turned easily by hand, but the lockshield will need a plastic adjuster to open it up (these tend to come with new lockshield valves). Why is my radiator so hot?
The diverter goes into a 'mid position', which allows the hot water to flow to both the water tank and the radiators. When a diverter fails or gets blocked with debris, hot water intended for the hot water circuit can get into the radiator circuit. Then the radiators will be hot even though the heat is turned off.Do you bleed a radiator when it is on or off?
Turn off your heating. You can't bleed a radiator when the heating is on, as it may be too hot to touch. You could also get hot water spraying out of the radiator. Use your radiator key to turn the valve at the top of the radiator. How do you know if a radiator valve is open or closed?
Check the radiator control valve: If a radiator is not getting hot: (steam or hot water) first see if the valve that controls it has been turned off. Try turning the valve counter-clockwise to see if it will open.Do all radiators have a lockshield valve?
Lockshield Valves ExplainedA lockshield valve is slightly different from manual and thermostatic valves as it controls how much water can exit a radiator. Every radiator has one, and you need them to make sure all the radiators remain balanced in your central heating system.
